Chronic diseases are the cause of approximately 75 percent of deaths in California. Environmental exposures contribute to a significant proportion of many chronic diseases. In 2002, the Sequoia Foundations with the Department of Occupational Health Division of California, received a grant from the California Wellness Foundation to support a planning effort to produce implementation options for an environmental health surveillance system to focus on prevalence and determinants of chronic diseases.
